Aeolian manufactured the rare Themodist-Metrostyle pianola, which is commonly called an "expression" instrument,
not quite what is termed a "reproducing" instrument.
The Metrostyle (which have a tempo abridgement pointer and red lines on rolls) players date back to 1901, when the 65-note
instruments first featured them.
Themodist-Metrostyle features were on all Duo-Art uprights and foreign grands but, push-up units with some "manual
controls" are especially rare. For many years Aeolian sold Metro-Art and Pianolist's Library rolls for those with these
special machines, with the rolls still featuring the waving red line.
Thankfully, though the expression machines are quite rare, rolls are still fairly easy to obtain and an impressive roll library
can be built without too much effort. Standard 65-Note rolls and some reed organ rolls will also play on this instrument.
